CHRISTMAS PARTY 2009

We wound up our first half of the year celebrating our annual Christmas
Party on the 9th of December.  Once again we held it at our home base,
the Roy Hobbs Community Centre.  We had a terrific turnout this year
and the food….well…you can’t beat a great “Pot Luck”.   Except for the
Patter Calls,  every Singing Call was a Christmas Song.  We can always
depend on Paul to strike the mood with the appropiate music.  It is from
this point on that the new dancers learn that Modern Square Dance
Music can be done to all types of music. 

Once again this year we raised money for the Cumberland Resource
Centre and it will be presented prior to Christmas.  There will be a post
to this site after the presentation.

We are all looking forward to the upcoming seasonal festivities,
and Evelyn and I  pesonally would like to wish everyone a very
Safe and Happy Christmas.

GREY CUP DANCE NOV 2009

At the Nov 28th Grey Cup Dance, put on by the Regional Callers to raise
money for the Ottawa Mission’s Christmas Dinner Programme,  the
Village Squares, for the second year, won the “most entertaining skit” in
the annual Half Time Show.  This year’s entry featured none other
than Don Peaches, (AKA  club president Bob Forsyth), emulating CBC’s
authority on sport and high fashion, Don Cherry.
Don Peaches gave the audience a play-by-play analysis of some of the
extraordinary dance moves he witnessed during the first half of the
evening.  He asked that the video tape, in this instance a live demo
team, first be played forward at normal speed to show the complete
action.  He then had them freeze and next do  the routine backward,
in other words “undance” the routine, stopping them occasionally and
relating various movements to football moves.  Doing a sequence in
reverse is a lot harder than you might think.  He then had the routine
run forward again only this time in slow motion while again commenting on various moves. 
The couples spent numerous hours in rehersals and had a lot of fun performing. 

The calling was done by none other than Don Peaches
sidekick Dave Currie.

It was nice to win the cup but what is more important is the sense of
camaradarie which such an effort produces in our club.  In fact, all
the clubs that performed skits during the half time show were winners
—however we got the Cup…..

Maurice and Kathy Amyot,  Noel and Mary Allen,  Bev Drummond 
& Brian Rose,  Marie Currie,  and Kay & Tony Ruffo. 
WELL DONE EVERYONE.

HALLOWEEN HAT NIGHT 2009

Again this year the club members outdid themselves….This was one of the largest turnouts we have had in recent years for this event….The new (kids) stole the show with some very unique costumes…..The Judges had difficulty deciding a winner so they selected two couples:  CJ McCaffery and Jozef Wielawek came as a Nun and a Priest;  and Rita Finnigan and Jay Kassirier also grabbed a prize for their costumes….Jozef had to leave early so CJ accepted on his behalf….For all of the activities of the evening check out the photos on the slideshow….

HALLOWEEN HAT NIGHT 2009

We had a wonderful turnout this year with more and more people coming in full costume….It was so difficult for the judges to select a winner and in the end they selected two couples….Once again, Village Squares you have outdone yourselves….For all the action, check out the slideshow…..

OPEN HOUSE 2009

This year’s open house was a smashing success.  On the final evening (Wed Sep 9) we had a turnout of potential dancers of 11 couples.  This is without a doubt the largest number I have seen in 11 seasons.  A large number of our regular dancers were on hand for this “Meet-and-Greet” occasion and let them know what a FUN activity square dancing is.
Paul (our caller) looked amazed and pleased as punch at the large number and their overall enthusiasm.  He introduced them to some basic calls and they all grasped the fundamentals very quickly. 
We are all looking forward to this coming season and the new friendships we will make.

YEAR END PARTY APR 2009

All good things must come to an end and so it was for our 2008-2009
dancing season.  It was a terriffic year:  we celebrated 35 years of the
club’s existence, co-founded by our one and only club caller couple,
Paul and Judy Adams;  we had a very well deserved trip to the Tropics;
we had a successful Bunny Hop; we graduated a group of new dancers;
and enjoyed our Final Night with a great dinner and party, just to
mention a few.

BUNNY HOP APRIL 2009

Our annual BUNNY HOP, once again, was a wonderful success.
 Although attendance was down a bit, everyone, the guests and our
club members alike, had a very enjoyable evening of dancing fun. 
St Pat’s High School is indeed one of the best venues in all of the
region for large dances.  Our callers, as usual, did a fabulous  job.
The club members, working on teams,  are to be congratulated on
all of their hard work at putting a dance of this scale together.

GRADUATION 2009

This year we had 5 new couples join the club.  We had a great evening of fun, entertainment and dancing.  Looking forward to having them dancing Mainstream in the next season.

GOOFERS NIGHT APRIL 2009

On April 1 we had a wonderful evening of dancing and “Entertainment”
as 5 members from our club took part in our Goofers Night.  This
doesn’t take place very often but when it does it is a lot of fun.
  Members are invited to call a Tip.  Paul, our caller, choregraphs the
routine for them and they study it for a few weeks then get their chance
to perfrom on Goofers Night.  The talent we have in the club is
outstanding and all the participants are to be congratulated for a job
well done. 
(There were’nt any real goofers so maybe we should be
calling it something else.)    The slide show gives the details.

SLEIGH RIDE FEB 21 2008

This was our 8th Annual Sleigh Ride and once again the
weather was exceptionally beautiful for an outdoor activity
such as this….We had a turnout of about 40 people and a good
representation from our new dancers….The day started with
the Sleigh Ride itself, followed by a fun Sing Along….By late
afternoon we were all ready for the delicious *Pot Luck*
dinner….Once again the members outdid themselves with
the large variety of scrumptious Pot Luck food….Of course
after dinner we danced the evening away.
Thanks to Moe & Kathy for having us into their home to
enjoy another delightful day together.
